About the Event
Malmaison: Josephine Bonaparte's retreat
Even Emperors have a family life and, thanks to Josephine, Emperor Napoleon was able to escape from the official life of his court to Malmaison, the Empress's beloved estate, which she considered her true home.
Malmaison was the setting for the Imperial couple's happiest days, a haven they shared with Josephine's two children, a place of parties, excursions, and lavish entertainments. The days before History took their toll on both their love and the
Empire!
Even after their divorce and Josephine's death, Malmaison remained dear to Napoleon, and it was here that he awaited arrest after losing the battle of Waterloo.
The elegant 18 th century mansion, with 19 th century additions, surrounded by beautiful gardens including Josephine's favorite rose garden, has been restored to its original state, with splendid period wall fabrics, painted
ceilings and exquisite furnishings, a perfect example of a noble household of the Napoleonic era.
